Statement from Former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy on EPA Rollbacks of Power Plant Rules

Washington, DC – June 11, 2025 – Today, 13th U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, former White House National Climate Advisor, and America Is All In Managing Co-Chair Gina McCarthy issued the following statement in response to the EPA’s announcement on the rollback of regulations around power plant pollution limits:
“The key rationale Zeldin is using to justify the dismantling of our nation's protections from power plant pollution is absolutely illogical and indefensible. It's a purely political play that goes against decades of science and policy review.
By giving a green light to more pollution, his legacy will forever be someone who does the bidding of the fossil fuel industry at the expense of our health. Everyone will be affected by his actions, but the most vulnerable among us, our kids and grandkids, will suffer the most. We must ensure that Trump's EPA adheres to the law and understands how weakening or removing pollution standards affects you and your community.”
In April, Gina McCarthy, former Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe and former EPA official Joe Goffman authored an op-ed on the state of the EPA under administrator Lee Zeldin. The EPA's announcement claims that power plants do not "contribute significantly" to air pollution, yet an analysis from the New York University’s Institute for Policy Integrity highlights that if it were a country, the US power sector would be the sixth largest emitter in the world.
