BACKGROUND:

Health professionals, health systems, and public health organizations are committed to addressing the health impacts of climate change and to addressing their own carbon footprints. The health care sector accounts for 8.5% of U.S. emissions, so every step taken to cut emissions is a critical part of the journey towards a healthier America. This group recognizes that climate change is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time, and that it disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable members of our communities. They work to raise awareness about the links between climate change and health, and to advocate for policies and programs that promote public health and environmental sustainability. Also, they promote climate resilience and preparedness, and the reduction of the carbon footprint of healthcare operations.
